I have a dolman top in a loose cotton weave that I bought this year.  It would be easy to copy as there are no darts so I could just trace round it.  The front was cut on the fold but there is a seam centre back.  I'm wondering if the CB seam is to stabilise the shape with this loose weave fabric.

What do you think?

It might just have been a way to make the layouts more economical.

I think that @jen  is right.

If a seam is straight, on-grain, and does not extend from any type of placket or opening the only reasons for it being there is economy of cutting, or just possibly that the fabric wasn't wide enough to cut the piece without a seam; but if the front doesn't need a seam for that reason I can't see that the back would.

Is there a slight curve there?   Not always noticeable but just gives a slight shape.
Failing that I think like @jen its probably to do with layout.
