New overlocker
« on: October 16, 2021, 09:35:24 AM »
A friend asked ages ago what overlocker I would like and I suggested the brother 1034 however it is now discontinued - I'm not very up on the new models available and unsure what the equivalent would be now? Is it the Brother 4234D?

(or any good recommendations for similar) send help!

I suppose it all depends on what you want to pay @Syrinx my first one was the Janome 644D, not very fancy, but worked hard and did a wonderful job.  Then I got the urge to buy a Bernina the 1100MDC. I does the same but a bit  smoother but I'm in no hurry to go for the Babylock, even if I have the money.

@Syrinx I have recently bought

this one:

I haven't had chance to play with it much yet, but my daughter bought the same one and I got it on her recommendation. Check the threading - it's amazing! The whole knife assembly bit swings right out of the way so you can see exactly what you're doing. It runs very smoothly, stitches nicely and is much quieter than my old Janome. GUR gave me excellent service and it arrived in no time.

The 1034 is a good workhorse, if you got a lightly used second hand one it could be a good deal. I replaced mine with the 4234 which has needle threading and the lower looper is easier to thread too. It also has adjustable stitch width. I've not used any other brand but have been very happy with both of them.

Yeah a second hand would be an option if I was buying, but it's to be a thank you gift so I thought 1034 was a good shout but it's been months since first asked & now you can't buy it!

I don't think the baby lock really warrant the price - and I do want something more than the basic. It'll get lots of use hence the 1034 suggestion.

Think the 43234 might be a good shout

Here is a review of all current Brother overlockers.

However, I have to say that when I bought my overlocker three or four years ago I tried a Brother in the shop, also a Pfaff and a Bernina 1150.  The Bernina won hands down and has given me excellent service.

It's a few years old now, but I have a Bernina 800DL. It's had plenty of use and it's been great. Dead easy to thread, doesn't throw tantrums and is very reliable.

It's more than I can say for my coverstitch. My love/hate relationship with it continues; I just don't hate it quite enough to get rid of it. Yet.

It's a Janome coverpro 1000.

A friend has said that the Bernina coverstitch is wonderful, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to pay so much for such a specialized machine. I may well change my mind once I've had a go on it, so we shall see.

Yeah my Janome 1000 could be temperamental but generally worked ok.
Glad I got the Babylock though.  They have gone up such a lot since then! M

Last spring just before all the covid fun and games got started I took a Bernina overlocker lab class from the Bernina Academy. It was one of the national educators for Bernina. Very posh, fancy workbook, limited seating, hands on assistance, lots of samples made, great snacks. Free too.  :perfect10: I've never been a fan of Bernina but I left that 3 ½ hour class absolutely smitten by the Bernina overlocker. They're overbudget for me but well worth saving up for.
Hey Bill! Read the manual!  Hehehe.
