I think you should wear your skirt with something like a silk blouse and a big chunky bling-y necklace.

If the dress code is black tie  Terry could wear whatever he wants plus a black tie!  :)
Life's too short for ironing.

Thank you for the encouragement!  I think I might wear the skirt with a bit of bling.

The birthday girl is his cousin's daughter so likely to be quite a few of his family around and they know him!  We'll get the dress suit (bought for a cruise back in 2000 but I don't think they date much!) out of the wardrobe and have a think.  Maybe it will only need a new pair of trousers - and his black funeral tie as suggested by @Ploshkin .

@Cazlyn the external appearance might be Compo but he gets the heebie jeebies at the thought of going into charity shops, let alone buy something in one to wear.  I'm happy to do so, if it can be washed.

Errrrmmm ... I dont think a black funeral tie is what they mean when they say black tie .....
black tie usually means a dickie bow.

Ploshie's suggestion was a bit tongue in cheek and I elaborated with the funeral bit.

In the end he'll wear something suitable!  M&S do a tuxedo jacket for £50 and matching trousers for £39 so if what's in the wardrobe doesn't fit or has died of old age that's what he'll wear; no point in spending any more for something that is very unlikely to be worn again.  I'm pretty sure there's a bow-tie and a dress shirt there too, also black shoes; trainers wouldn't look good with that lot.

But they are brand new and sparkling white!  Not beige and tramped across muddy marshland.

Trainers have generally become much more acceptable in all situations.  Until recently trainers with a skirt/dress were a big no-no but lots of people wear that combination now.  Maybe it's a legacy from lockdown.
