quick quilt ideas please
« on: June 09, 2017, 10:38:15 AM »
I need to make a lap quilt for a dear friend (  :o yes, I have one....just the one!) and I'm looking for ideas. I want it to be fat quarter friendly and not too small in pieces as I am using floral/rose print fat quarters and I don't want to lose the roses too much. I need it to be an easy, quickish pattern as I still have another 3 quilts "on the go".   Lowie, I'm sorta thinking of your avatar?
Any suggestions would be terrific, I've spent ages on the 'net and just can't make up my mind.

....and the dusting and vacuming can wait!

Yup, that's quick and easy Rubes. It's called "square in a box" and is made from 2.5" squares and 2.5" x 6.5" strips iirc . You can alter the size as long as you keep those proportions.  :)
Triumph of hope over experience :D

I tend to do big blocks and 9 patches, and have done so successfully with big rose patterned fabric so you don't lose the flowers.

So a checkerboard of 10x10" squares of big florals and a checkerboard of 9 patch blocks (I tend to use plains/small florals/stripes) as it's quick to run up and easy to quilt. The florals mean it doesn't matter that it's not so fancy/tricksy piecing as they are beautiful all by themselves.

The maths would be a lot easier if you adjust the sizes.
9"x9" finished (9.5"x9.5" cut)  for the florals and 3"x3" finished (3.5"x3.5" cut) for the 9patch would work well.

That is if your FQs of the floral are metric fat quarter metres and 50cm/20" long.  If they are imperial/America FQs and only 18" long you would have to adjust to 9.25"x9.25" cut (8.25"x8.25" finished)    and 3.25"x3.25" cut (2.75"x2.75" finished).

Now bear with me here....

I know this is single bed size but the principle is the same...

Your feature Rose fabric in middle surrounded by easy, peasy, squeeze the lemons, chill squares in coordinating colours, 3 or 4 depending on how large you want the feature square.

All the colours surrounding the pirate print (fussy cut yardage) were from FQ's.

Nice and easy, nice and quick and you can even QAYG it if you're that way inclined!

Hah, I just like 10" blocks for the easy to make up to lap quilt size (4x5) with no need for a border. That's because I'm lazy and like multiples that are easy to do!

Talking of lap quilts, I really should get on with my spiral geese. I might bail on the hand sewing as I haven't touched it for a year because that's how mlch I hate hand sewing. I may also run out of my fabrics. FPP design I made was supposed to be quick!

Thanks everyone. You know.....I've never done a 9 patch  :o so may give that a go alternating with the larger feature blocks.  :)
