I often sneak a look at the Dark Side and feel I must make the effort to join in but the book I have is not very helpful so can anyone recommend a good book for a beginner.

A very good book is this one:
The Quilters' Bible by Linda Clements. Shows lots of techniques, clear and descriptive!

I have learnt by my mistakes: Sewing machines now are Bernina 720, Bernina 1008, Bernina 801 from 1981, Brother overlocker, ancient but works well

I’m not very experienced and need to check what I’m doing every step of the way! My first point of reference is Sarah Payne’s Quilt School. I’ve done several of the projects from the book and they’ve all worked!

Another good beginner book is “Rotary Magic”. It’s focus is use of the rotary cutter, but also does a nice job covering basics of quilting
