Find? Buy? Use? Stroke? Play with?

A big welcome from me too!  Look forward to seeing your projects!

Jessie, who is very happy to be here!!  :),  but who has far too many sewing machines to be healthy, and a fabric stash which is becoming embarrassing.

Hi and welcome.
I was lucky enough to learn to sew from my mom. And we always had a machine in the house. As a teenager I loved sewing my own clothes. But I remember when she bought me my very own machine. I was actually in university. I still have it and use it (20 years later). So It's great that you want to get the right one. Sounds like the right time.  Happy Sewing!  :sew: :D

Hello and welcome to both of you  :).
My own advice would be to see if there are any established sewing machine shops around where you live or within traveling distance, take her there and let her tell the owner what she wants. She should be able to try several machines out while there to see which she likes best, get the right one and it'll most likely frustrate her to start with but pretty soon it'll fit like a comfy pair of slippers.

thanks everyone

and you are right @Surest1tch  we do have a couple of good local sewing machine shops (and haberdashery shops too) and they are helpful (and reassuring) to have close by

you may have seen on other threads, we have looked at quite a few machines and relatively quickly arrived at the (slightly over budget) Brother A16. The local shop let her play with it for nearly an hour and it felt very natural
