@Ohsewsimple it's always the machines fault.
Everyone knows that.

@Bill in my experience 9 out of 10 cases it’s user error! :P

Youre either drinking too much or too little wine. There needs to be a balance.  :P

I tell  mine what we're going to do that day.  My industiral straight stitch, Tim Consew, My Rimoldi is Salvadore, my Singer no. 3 is The Duke, Yancy is my 201...my treadle at home is Mike.

I just told one of them it was going to sew today or I was going to do some not nice things to it.

I get it.

@Kwaaked that's what I do with cars.  They often behave for a while afterwards.  :P
@Ohsewsimple I was hoping it was user error so I could change something but I'm not yet convinced.  Will try again at the weekend.

@Kitten what machine is it?   Just repeating stuff I’m  sure you know  :  make sure you’re not right on the edge of the fabric, sewing on double fabric and a needle that’s not blunt.  (It shocked me when I found many people thought they only needed changing when they broke. One of those was a sewing teacher! :scream:).  Personally I don’t use the locking stitch much.  I find it takes too long for my liking so prefer sticking it in reverse.

@Ohsewsimple the machine I'm having issues with is the Janome 4950 QCP (the same as Diane's new one).
I've tried reverse, my usual method, and lock stitch but neither look tidy on this machine.

I don't have such issues with my Brother, nor with the Janome HD9 (which is a lovely machine) so thought maybe I need to do something different with this one.

Mmm interesting @Kitten.  Diane's samples look fine.  I wonder if it needs looking at???
Only other thing is what thread are you using and is it the same top and bottom?   It never ceases to amaze me just how simple things can make such a difference.

@Ohsewsimple I use Gutermann Sew All thread, top and bottom, and the stitches are fine apart from the mess at the start & end.
Maybe I need to get it seen to, I've only had it just about a year so should be under guarantee if there is a problem other than the idiot behind the needle!

Weird both ends, that is odd @Kitten   I'm another one who just presses reverse after a couple of stitches.

I also use Gutermann sew all thread top and bottom. I usually start off quite slow then speed up a bit about an inch or so in to the fabric.
I’m a fabricholic on the road to recovery. Just kidding. I’m on the road to the fabric store.

That is odd.  Has it always been like that @Kitten
Might be worth getting it looked at.  For now maybe try another method.  Start a little bit in from the edge with the machine in reverse then come forward.  Should be a neat method.
