I think my favourite will always be log cabin.  The very first quilty thing I ever did was a log cabin, Ohio Star wall hanging made from curtain fabric and cut using tape measure and scissors (I had never heard of rotary cutters then)

My absolute favourite quilt is the second ever quilt I made.  I think it will always be my favourite.  The pattern is in Jelly Roll Quilts by Pam & Nicky Lintott so instructions are excellent.  Always happy to loan the book.

I like the versatility of log cabin.  This was the 1/4 square log cabin I made for Project Linus a couple of years back.  On a larger size you get the illusion of the squares floating.
