Which way up is my fabric?

Which way up is my fabric?
« on: June 20, 2017, 16:44:47 PM »
I have a lovely italian silk with covered in roses on a sort of chicken wire/lace background.  But I can't tell which way up it should go.  There is writing on one of the selvedges - could this possibly be a helpful clue?  Is the writing always on one side or the other?

I have taken four photos and posted them on my Facebook page.  Each one shows the writing to give it direction.  This is the link to my page (if I'm not allowed to post the link please tell me where I can put the photos).

Well I'd say the made in Italy should read from left to right so the big picture on your facebook page is the correct way up

I'd say it's whichever way you want :) Didin't ever think of fabric in terms of up/down, just warp, weft and bias.
What are you making out of it? :sew:

Well I would be careful if it was a design that had an obvious up and down like 'why are your flowers upside down'?
Otherwise I would agree with Jo.

oh! that's easy - both are the wrong way up.
Sorry not helpful.
I'd go for the big picture.

I'm making vogue 1422.  I asked my husband and he said it looks as though a basket of roses has been tipped (albeit artistically) onto some lace (that resembles chicken wire).  So I think any way round could be correct.  I'll just have to make sure whichever way I go, I mark the fabric so I don't forget!

Thank you

It's one of those fabrics which doesn't have a top or a bottom, which means you can have it either way, but I would advise that you use a one-way/with nap layout

To a lacemaker's eye it's not chicken wire!  :fish: :fish:
It's quite clearly point ground mesh with a bit of Kat stitch and a bit of honeycomb ground.  Looks like a continental design rather than English but it's in the point ground family of bobbin laces which includes English Bucks Point.

OK, that's all a bit technical, in lay terms it's (probably) laser printed from a scan of a real piece of lace with photos of roses on top.

I like it.  :P

Di daaaa

Tiny problem with the zip but not noticeable enough for me to re do it.  The silk was a dream to sew.

WOW :D. Those roses really pop - they look 3D. You will get plenty of compliments when you wear that dress and deservedly so.

Do you have a special occasion coming up where you will wear it?
