I have spent a couple of days making a practice block for the centre placemat for which I had worked out my design.  Got the FGs right but decided that I couldn't be doing with tiny QSTs which would result in lumpy points all quite close together as the block is only 8 x 16 ins.

Had a little inspiration and decided that the Arrowhead block (BOM April 2017) - which is the first one I ever made - might be just the thing. The original is a 9" block so too big but I had to make it just to see how it worked. Followed this up with a smaller version founded on a mixture of guesswork and cutting up bits of paper.

This one came out at a smidge under 8 ins so I can confidently make two from the remains of my patterned fabric.

I've run out of navy blue thread. Resorting to black for inside seams but will need to track down decent quality navy. I miss being able to nip up to Hobbycraft which was 1.25 miles from my house in East Dorset  :[

eta Have just ordered from Amazon for speed and free p&p as I had 4 items I wanted. Try to avoid using them as much as poss. but can't be doing with paying an extra £2.99 or whatever for 3 reels of thread!

I had to get some thread for an urgent project and had very good service from Exeter Sewing Machines. I ordered on Monday evening, the threads were dispatched on Tuesday and arrived via Royal Mail on Wednesday. (If ordering, please bear in mind that they are closed on Sundays and Mondays.)

I made a rectangular panel, quilted it and made it into a little tote bag.

I have finished!

More pics here, including Corner porn

And I am very pleased, not least that the alternate border fabric worked so well but that I had enough of my feature fabric (a raggedy and well cut into FQ) to use for the (generous) border ... 3" cut, 1/2" sewed onto the front.

I incorporated a hanging sleeve into the body of the hanging by turning it under and finished the binding with blanket stitch @mudcat .

It was interesting mitring  45 degree corners (?) for the first time but Im ok with how they turned out ... not as perfect as the 90 degree ones but good enough and after all,  only God is perfect1

Yes Im pleased with this, I will have to see if I can find an appropriate tassel (or 3) to finish this off!

Fab job @Iminei  :perfect10:

Quick question, which is probbly a bit daft now I come to voice it. I'm putting a 5/8" border round the centre placemat and wonder if it should be equal front and back ie 5/8" on the back as well? It's not going to be on show and I have cut the backing and the wadding larger than the top so there will be coverage on the back whatever I do.

@Flobear do you mean a border or binding? If it's a binding, as long as it covers the stitching line on the back it can be any size you like, but it is probably simplest to make it 5/8 +5/8 + 1/2 for seam allowances, unless your're doing double fold in which case (5/8+5/8+1/4)x2

If its a binding you are referring to,  which I suspect it is if it is on the back, then ... No ... front and back binding widths rarely are / dont have to be symmetrical!

I like playing with bindings ... this one has 1/2" or so (maybe 5/8ths, needle was set in the middle) on the front and more on the back ... I cut the fabric 3 3/4" wide (please dont ask me why_) which was then halved ... you can do the maths!

Im very pleased I got my binding out of this fabric  :D
