After several evenings spent with Google and looking through old photos, I think I may have an idea of what to make, though I still need to decide how to make it.

The house in which I grew up had a tiled hall and I managed to find an old photo of it.

*Edit - I've just spotted a mistake in the tiling in the border in the upper right of the photo!

I knew the tiles were likely made by Maw & Co of Jackfield and via Google I was able to find an old pattern book of their "Geometric and Roman Mosaics Encaustic Tile Pavements". Looking at the pattern book, it would suggest our hall was pattern number 29 but with a slight variation on the border to make it narrower.

Even though there are various options for a quilt block in the main part of the floor, I think I am going try the corner embellishment that is shown in the pattern book, but I need to decide if I'm going to do this by machine piecing, EPP or FPP.

Excellent!!! So much interest! Im going to run this as Junes Challenge ....

and suggest you all make a wall hanging out of your tiles, this will mean it neednt be Square! It can be as small or large as you wish but the blocks within would need to be proportional and you can pick and choose your design based on your inspiration !

@Iminei Two mistakes? I can see where the red and black triangles have been transposed, but I can't spot the second mistake. Please put me out of my misery before I spend too long looking at this.

We;re back with the

TSP Darksides 1st Flash Make
JUNE 2022

I would like you to a find pictures of TILES;
Tiles have been around for centuries in all the major cultures of the world

They decorate paths, hallways, walls, ceilings, roofs, courtyards, temples, churches ....
Tiles are everywhere!

Choose any image that takes your fancy
and let your creative juices flow...

A patterned fabric could mimic the tube lining of a tile,
surround it with pieced blocks to complete the design.
Use your imagination!

You can choose to make a miniature piece, 6"  8" or 12" block or go even larger
with a stand alone wall hanging as long as the components within are proportional

YOU have to work out the dimensions, technique and colour scheme.

Here are a few images to get you started

This Flash Make will run throughout JUNE ending on the 30th.

Please post pics throughout this thread showing inspiration,
materials, progress and your completed block
and I will amalgamate them into an album.

I would really like to come up with a block for placemats for my Sis-in-Wales' (not Plosh) kitchen table.

The pattern on the tiles is not suggesting anything atm. as it is wiggly and intricate. I wonder if any of the experienced Darksiders can point me to a place where I can see some ideas. Clearly I am not going to attempt to replicate the pattern - apart from the colours - but I'd like to come up with something that looks as if it belongs.

S-i-W is an artist and a calligrapher but only sews when necessary to make/repair something in the household or clothing line. I need to be able to show her several ideas to see what she would like. All I have been able to do so far is show her pics of the blocks in the 2020 and 2021 BoMs.

Thank you  :thumb:

@Flobear Is that bottom tile upside down or are all the motifs like that?

You could replicate the pattern with the quilting.
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.

@Flobear Could you get a wiggly effect using drunkards path blocks?
