I love the middle one too!

Well done you, they are all lovely!

I've been playing with Illustrator and here are half a dozen alternative arrangements of the split 9 patch block.  I've only used two colours, a pale background and a dark patterned fabric.  Some of the arrangements have patterned fabrics together - they would of course look better in a project where lots of different fabrics are used.

IMO they would all look best with lots of different dark/coloured fabrics.

Thankyou everyone for your opinions . I too am partial to the second block, and I sorta like the "business" of the third one particularly when it is "multiplied" but my friend is a very straight, old fashioned gal and I think she would like the "easy eye" of the first pattern, particularly if I alternated it with large and then little squares in the centre. It is geometrically simple and instantly "see-able" which I think would suit her to a tee. I'll keep making my big blocks and keep playing with it.

Ruby's first block is the right hand side of my third pic, and if you do a half-drop repeat with those blocks you get the left hand illustration.

Her middle block would make either of the layouts in my second illustration, depending on how the blocks are rotated.

Her third block looks diagonal, but repeat it several times and it looks rather different.  Keeping all the blocks the same way around it will be like the left hand part of this pic, rotate alternate blocks 90 degrees and it will be like the right hand side of the pic.

No2's my favourite as well. If you like the first one you could sash between the blocks to break up the , er, blockiness (?)

OMG..I showed my friend a few of the layouts and asked her which she liked, pretending I was doing a quilt for a work colleague....wouldn't you know it....she loved the look of the straight forward, uncut 9 patch!!!! This could be a fast make afterall!! :) :)

ooo yes you're right Catlar....I've just finished a handful of blocks and if my friend wants them "as is" I think it will definately need some sashing. I'm thinking I might even sash it just vertically and use the leftover floral fabric...will have to have a play tomorrow and see what I can do. 0_0
