I would make it the size it comes out as .. I personally prefer sq quilts but thats my choice.

It will come together very quickly once youve cut the pieces ... the hardest part will be deciding on the 'pattern'

Couple of Linkys if youre interested

It doesnt need to be 1/4" seam if you're worried about it, your normal setting + small stitch length (2 ?) will do as long as you factor that into your cutting measurements and its consistent throughout the whole project.

And Im always on the end of the phone if you have a query .. tho you're not exactly a beginner!

ETA ... 100% cotton or bamboo if you can afford it and want it. Please stay away from the poly ... my opinion only!

Polyester wadding will make it puffy.
I use Hobbs 80/20 for most of my quilts

Cotton wadding, or 80/20 cotton poly.  Poly is lighter but puffier.

If you want it to be really thin you could try using an old flanelette sheet.

Or bump ... some of my very first quilts were layered with bump, curtain interlining .. resulting from a combination of poverty and ignorance

Worked fine!

I have used bump for making bags there used to be a place here that sold it really cheap as off cuts when they made curtains for  people, some of the offcuts where enormous

I started sewing this yesterday and after a couple of tweeks  it seems to sew together quite well, I think I have an idea of what I am going to do with it pattern wise, when I checked there is really only 2 colours and 2 patterns that I have enough to do anything with so I am going to experiment today.

These are beautiful and the finished quilt will be stunning! The quilt will feel amazing - cool and light and a natural wadding would be perfect!

@Sara-S somewhat similar to flannel here. It's generally natural color like muslin, loosely woven, rather thick and brushed. It's typically cotton or a cotton rich blend. It is both to interline and insulate. Since it's used in drapery it comes 54" or sometimes wider.

TMI?   :)
Hey Bill! Read the manual!  Hehehe.

@WendyW & @Sara-S I only knew from looking it up the previous time someone suggested it. Gotta keep Google open on another device when I'm here. Thank heaven for having had an English grandmother. I knew a few terms.

I am now wondering if these fabrics could be used for the quilted jacket I fancy making, would they be too thin, maybe I should post this on the jacket thread.
