@Lowena if you take a piece of quilting cotton and pull it in both directions you will find that it will have a bit of give across the width of the fabric i.e. at right angles to the selvages but no give at all lengthwise i.e. parallel to the selvages.

If you can cut strips parallel to the selvages there is no stretch when you join them so you don't get wavy seams.
Life's too short for ironing.

You did have a deprived childhood! ;)

I did do sewing at school, but learnt far more from my mother, who would put me on the right track when the teacher had told me something that while not 'wrong' wasn't the easiest way to do it. And there always books... ;)

When I bought my first sewing machine in 1978, I also bought this. It's still my 'go to' reference book.  :)

Luckily (and it was luck) I did cut it lengthwise thank you @Ploshkin. It's all ready to go.  0_0

and I also cut strips on lengthwise grain for log cabins and it really made them a breeze to sew.

@Sakar

Every days a school day !!! I shall try that with my next few December BOMs

I quite like those subtle colours, though admittedly the fraying could be a pain. I never buy jelly rolls, I just cut my own bits, but how about something like this?  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]   I think it might look lovely with all your soft colours.

Must point out I didn’t make those 2, just found them when I looked for jelly roll quilts. I do love browsing pictures of quilts! 0_0
