Stitches, last time I made a tote, I used an old Lever Arch file as the base - it's lovely and flat, and very sturdy.

Jessie, who is very happy to be here!!  :),  but who has far too many sewing machines to be healthy, and a fabric stash which is becoming embarrassing.

I've used old X-Ray film, also used the stuff you get for little ones to embroider onto - sort of plastic with holes in it.
If life gives you lemons, add to gin and tonic !

I have used plastic mesh canvas like this one before for a duffel bag. But if you are just making a tote bag, you may be able to get away with using something you have at home like others mentioned. I have used a cereal box before for a smaller bag. I cut two pieces of the bag bottom out of a cereal box and wrapped it with packaging tape (so that it doesn't get soggy easily when wet).

I buy plastic place mats from the £1 shops and cut them to size!
