Well you couldn't get much cheaper could you, at a penny starting price!!!

..... but surely its older than '50's???

I would say, from the styling of the cabinet ..... thirties ???

1950s Original Singer Sowing Machine Enclosed In Own Cabinet.

and we would have to get someone's advice ...Vege ??? ... on its practicality as a sowing machine !  :D

Very heavy to wheel through the fields I should imagine.

Hi Iminei,

My thoughts are:
I think it's a treadle 28k, in a 95k fridge cabinet possibly, I have to say I'm intrigued about its power source! I'm not sure if they've they've got a treadle in there or a 95k clutch motor?

Either way the angle on the leather belt suggests the power source is in the cabinet rather than a small motor on the back.

But both cabinet and machine look we kept, even if the machine has a missing patch of decals.

How old do you think it is then ... remember I know nothing so although the number you mentioned is probably a clue, to me it means nothing!

Fridge cabinet ???? are we thinking chilled drinks here?

The machine is probably 1930s at the latest so you're probably looking at it being around 100yrs old.

so it'll be a good quality machine, it's probably shuttle rather than bobbin which I understand to be relatively bomb proof in terms of timing and reliability.

Sadly no chilled drinks in this cabinet...

The style of cabinet is called a fridge cabinet because they look like a fridge and are about the same size. The front door opens full 180 degrees and supports the lid, they're very compact.

Does that help?

Yes thank you very much!
(pity about the drinks!)

So do you think the machine was retro fitted into the cabinet ?

Hard to tell,
If this was a very late 28k (just shy of a 128k) it would have been made in the 1930s then this cabinet may have been an early one in this style.

But I'm not great on dating cabinet styles or machines this old, I like mine a little newer. The serial number would be handy.

I normally associate this cabinet with 45ks but theoretically they could mix and match machines and cabinets fairly freely.

I'd love to know what's inside the cabinet, is it a treadle or a clutch? But I feel bad bothering the seller with no intention of buying.

I've actually seen a cabinet like this today and it did have a treadle in it!

So I think it probably is all original.

The one thing I can do is distinguish between a shuttle machine and a bobbin machine from a distance!  That one has a shuttle.

Shuttle machines have two slide plates spanning the full front-to-back depth of the machine bed.  Round bobbin machines have a 'D' shape plate.
