I was just the right age when flares and loon pants came out, so no adjustment of existing clothing was necessary in my case.

I too was a proponent of adding bits to jeans - I think they were still called bell bottoms then. I'm not sure when they became known as flares.
We also tie dyed them with bleach. I see tie dying is back too but we have to call it Shibori now.
