Please can someone tell me the best thread for sewing leather, using my Singer 201K?
I have some 100% cotton and Gutermann sew-all, but I'm not sure if either is suitable

I don't think either of those will be strong enough. I would use Gütermann
Extra Strong

Brenda. My machines are: Corona, a 1953 Singer 201K-3, Caroline, a 1940 Singer 201K-3, Thirza, 1949 Singer 221K, Azilia, 1957 Singer 201K-MK2 and Vera, a Husqvarna 350 SewEasy about 20 years old. Also Bernina 1150 overlocker and Elna 444 Coverstitcher.

I've used both extra strong and topstitch. I'd go extra strong for the seams and, well, topstitch for topstitching.
The topstitching thread is beautiful quality it really bring a garment to life. Bear in mind the length is much shorter so you might need two or three spools if you're doing lots. I used three on my Mum's mac raincoat:
