I have been gifted these modern retro inspired fabrics and want quick and simple design ideas for a quilt.

The fabrics are mainly cut into 4 1/2" squares with some 4" HSTs in the mix and some gorgeous grey yardage! There is also a divine pictorial print which surely should be used as a whole or fussy cut ... But that is for another project.

I'm thinking a simple design with the retro prints but whilst still packing a punch ....

I've put together some HSt's and am wondering which combos look the best ..

Same colours, same designs or 1/2 Grey 1/2 pattern

I'd go for Flying geese made with hsts and a grey. Half grey / half patterned with pattern bits together to make the geese. Looks really effective with strong retro fabrics  :)

For what it's worth, I think the 1/2 grey - 1/2 patterned combo looks really good - very classic and simple. :)

If you want to know what I was originally trying with these:

And I made this inspiration board but I don't know anything about quilting hence why it's had to find a new home:

Same colours, same designs or 1/2 Grey 1/2 pattern

Half grey and half patern

The fabrics are mainly cut into 4 1/2" squares with some 4" HSTs in the mix and some gorgeous grey yardage!

It's not clear whether you mean HSTs cut from 4" x 4" or HSTs sewn together to make 4" x 4" squares.

Cutting 4.5" x 4.5" squares into triangles and sewing together again will only make squares 3.5" x 3.5" when trimmed.  You have to go with whichever is the smaller size, so get all of your HSTs cut out first.

I've been sewing the cut triangles into squares (the trad method) and trimming them to 4"  :o and trimming some of the few already constructed HST's down to 4" sq.

I was wondering if something like this would be too traditional .......

or something more modern like this ....

Too many decisions - that's why I avoid going into Subway, my mind goes blank and I end up with something I didn't really want.
As far as the geese go my preference would be for single colours otherwise they may not all look goosy.  I like that modern goose design - you have the quilting skill to be able to cope with the amount of negative space.

I agree with Ploshkin - the single-coloured geese look more effective IMHO. However -  -< - the trad is nice too.  :) Decisions, decisions.

That's the goosey pattern I meant  :loveit: Single pattern gooseys and grey background does it for me.
P.S. can't see your first pic ( the "is this too traditional "one )
