I've just had my 431g delivered.

It doesn't work  :(  Not at all  :(  No power.  Can't turn the wheel.

I knew this was a possibility, but...

So I'm about to have fun delving into it's innards, and possibly looking for a replacement motor.

It's rather nice though  :)

Oh dear, but at least you know how to look at the innards. I wouldn’t have a clue and as to fitting a new motor!…

It would be nice if I could get the motor out - it appears to be jammed solid.

WD40, blow torch and a crow bar will move anything  :thumb:

I've found the reason nothing moved...

I also found that it does have power to the lamp - after I actually put a bulb in  :S

The motor still doesn't do anything, and I can't get it out despite watching a couple of videos - it's just stuck fast.  I've tried all sorts, including hair drier for heat and a screwdriver to lever (note, @Bill , not a blow torch or crow bar) and I've managed to crack the housing slightly, only slightly!.
It's currently (hopefully) soaking up some WD40, but I feel I may have to order some Plusgas...

I've had two of these machines, and when they work they are brilliant!  Best of luck with the fixing of!
I have learnt by my mistakes: Sewing machines now are Bernina 720, Bernina 1008, Bernina 801 from 1981, Brother overlocker, ancient but works well

Finally I've got the motor out - a spark plug socket was just the right diameter to sit on the top edge and be bashed with a hammer gently tapped with a small hammer.
Unfortunately, I'm not convinced it's in very good shape.  I'm about to send it off to SewLincs to see what he thinks.

Maybe it just needs a capacitor change? Good luck with it - they are lovely if they go well aren't they?

@LeilaMay I'm really hoping it will topstitch the edges of bags I make, that free arm would be sooo much easier than turning bags inside out and fiddling then round.  It does seem to stitch beautifully by just turning the handwheel.

Postiepants brought the motor back today and the man at SewLincs can do miracles - it works!

I'm just struggling to get it back in though, as apparently old Bakelite will have expanded, so I'm currently dremelling the shaft bit down.  Just need to polish the surfaces I've sanded now then I reckon it'll go in.  I just hope it does sew well enough after all this faffing - although I do love tinkering with old machines.
Once I've tested it's sewing capabilities, then I'll give it a better clean up.

Hmmm. The motor went in, and it worked.  Kind of.  I've now discovered that there is a gear spring in the hand wheel that is broken.  Bother!!!  Looks like I'll have to buy a whole handwheel just for that part, if I can find one...

If the guy at SewLincs doesn't have one try Helen Howes.  She's in your neck of the woods too.
Brenda.  My machines are: Corona, a 1953 Singer 201K-3, Caroline, a 1940 Singer 201K-3, Thirza, 1949 Singer 221K, Azilia, 1957 Singer 201K-MK2 and Vera, a Husqvarna 350 SewEasy about 20 years old. Also Bernina 1150 overlocker and Elna 444 Coverstitcher.
