Soft viscose - why did I..

Soft viscose - why did I..
« on: March 11, 2017, 13:43:18 PM »
... decide to make a sleeved shift style dress from some very soft viscose.  I should have learned my lesson by now.  I have almost no feeling in my fingertips (due to injury) so this fabric I cannot feel!  I am really struggling to inset the sleeves because it keeps moving and I don't feel it.  I keep applying antibact to my hands to give more grip.  I have to go by sight only....  :(

I have several lengths of soft viscose and having sewn it once, never want to do it again.  :(

I usually run it through a starch bath before I cut it out, but I know what you mean.

I always use tissue paper to cut it out.  But can't really help with suggestions for problems inserting sleeves I'm afraid  :(

If you haven't got much grip would very thin latex or nitrile gloves (like surgeons gloves) help for that bit.

Life's too short for ironing.

You're right I should have, duh!  I used some spray starch for the darts and that worked.

I have a yard or so left of this so will get it starched up ready for next time, I don't like to waste it but will not be buying any more :-(

I will certainly do that for the remaining length, thanks for the tip    0_0

I must be too stressed, of course, gloves would be very useful, and I have some in the cupboard.  Never gave it a thought.  Thanks for that!  :D

I have taken a break, had a chat with a friend, who helped me to calm down and now I have managed to tack the sleeves in place ready for the machine.  I will definitely wear a latex glove on one hand for the machining  :vintage: :-)

Well done!   Never thought of latex gloves. May come in handy for me later.  My hands are getting worse as the years go by.  Too much  sewing I guess

Good for you. It's always nice to triumph over a difficult piece of fabric!

I will be getting some starch as suggested by Catlar, for the remaining fabric.  I have sewn the other sleeve today and will do the hemming tomorrow.  It's been such a lovely sunny day here that I spent all afternoon with my dog and camera in the local meadow and along the river bank.  :woof: 0_0

Gelatine works the same way as starch if you prefer.
