Please, does anyone have a yarn swift - umbrella swift - for sale? I just cannot wind wool skeins on my own I would be so very grateful if anyone has one they would sell me! Thank you
@Snowgoose - Do you mean wind as in making a skein by winding the yarn onto a swift, or putting a skein onto a swift and then unwinding it into a ball?
I ask because if you want to unwind skeins using a swift then the lower-priced springy plastic options work very well for this, even though they are a lot cheaper than the wooden ones.
However if you are making up skeins by winding yarn onto a swift then I would suggest you invest in a sturdier wooden swift.
I used to hand dye a lot of yarn, and I learned that a springy plastic swift produces irregular skeins - because of its inherent springiness - and much tidier looking skeins were achieved using a solid wooden swift.
(I know I may sound like I am splitting hairs here but if you were intending to sell your skeins, as I was, then neat-looking skeins are important. Also I would frequently dye skeins, and once dyed and dried, irregular skeins were a nightmare to unwind using a swift).
Edit to add - although it may well have been operator error... but I just could never get neat skeins - ie same diameter winds - using a springy swift! YMMV
