@K.H.   No the method I use can be used on finished garments and isn’t machine sewn.  You have to hand sew a channel of catch stitches to the facing over a piece of elastic which is attached to the facing at one end.  The elastic is pulled up to fit and then attached to the facing at the other end.  If you give me your email address I’d be happy to send you the method from the book.  Better explained that I can.  :)  Maybe some diagrams as well.

Good news, I did some alterations and was quite happy with the fit.
Bad news, I didn't get a chance to wear it.
The plan was to go to a socially distant Christmas lunch on Sunday in the dress. Instead I was elbow deep in hot soapy water and cleaning cloths.
I went "up norf" on Thursday to help my daughter move house, intending to come home Saturday evening but it just took too long to move and clean down the house.
Oh well, there is always Christmas day!
