Good button supplier?
« on: March 02, 2018, 14:07:05 PM »
I`ve just placed my first order with Totally Buttons - the buttons look good but I think the delivery is  steep for just 6 buttons (£2.74)

Where do other people buy their buttons?  I have a couple of shops locally but they have very little choice

I used to have a fabulous habby  place nearby but she’s retired. I was looking for buttons recently and was shocked at the prices. I’ve just paid 90p each for some, while other might think that’s OK I thought it was a bit steep. If you’re near Carlisle then Fun 2 Do have a really good selection... other than that I think markets are probably the best place...or buy garments from a charity shop and use those.

Looks like I'll be heading for the Rag MArket in Brum at Easter- come find some buttons for bargain prices?!

Very tempting DM.  Do you know which is the nearest station to the Rag Market?  Stratford trains go to Moor Street

And conveniently, that's the nearest.  When you come out, take a sharp left towards that 'orrible melted golf ball building, skirt round it to the church, and you're there.  Under 5 minutes.
Generally we meet in the church tea room, which is dead easy to find, and has toilets!
Most meet ups follow the same routine- meet, tea, wee, markets.  Lunch, Fancy Silk Store, wee, Barry's warehous, pub and stash comparison.
TAkes from about 1030 to 4 ish if we do the full route.
C'est moi!

I get all mine from a charity shop near me which has some astonishong stuff. I pop in every week to see if there's anything new. I realise that's not much use to almost all of you!

The button lady on Stockport market was always good. Haven't been there for ages so I assume she is still going. There's a good haberdashery stall in Sheffield Market (now in the Moor). I've had a few nice buttons there including some great clockface buttons for a steampunk blouse which had clockfaces on the fabric.

If you visit Fabworks in person they have some reasonably priced buttons though not a full range. But there is quite a good haberdashery stall on Dewsbury market which has reasonably priced buttons which is worth a visit if you go to Fabworks on market day.

I buy mine wherever I can find somewhere I can get hold of decent quality different to the norm buttons.  I've had some gorgeous vintage buttons off ebay, antique fayres have some nice ones too.  I'm never lucky enough to find any garments with them or loose ones in the local charity shops  :'(.

Thanks for your suggestions. The ones I bought from Totally Buttons were quite cheap but the postage more than doubled the price.  I want some that are a bit out of the ordinary so I will certainly start checking out the charity shops

Postage charges can be such a problem for small orders.  Jaycotts and Weaver Dee both have a selection of buttons and a fixed charge of £1.50 p&p.

Some charity shops specialise in vintage habby. However it does mean a visit in person. I don't know your area @sewingj but for anyone in Leeds I recommend Sue Ryder shop in Headingley for vintage patterns mainly and Edinburgers should try the St Columba's Hospice shop on Leith Walk, again for patterns but some buttons and other bits.

Gosh Tannymore, how come you know so many places and in detail?
I have bookmarked this ebay site.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/kathym8826/m.html?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEFSXS%3AMESOI&_trksid=p2053788.m1543.l2654
(Sorry can't make the hyperlink work.)
She has new and used buttons, prices are reasonable and packaged well.
My other source is charity haberdashery. I have a very large button collection.

Thanks for all of those.
I must admit I had never thought to look in charity shops - my local town (Stratford upon Avon) tends to have rather upmarket ones -  which is good if you are looking for second hand clothes but not if you are hoping for bargains!

Well @classical retro a visit to family members often involves a shopping opportunity, especially a fabric or habby shopping opportunity and like a lot of you I love a root round a charity shop. I came across the Sue Ryder shop in Headingley by chance and had I not been accompanied by DH (aka Jiminy Cricket) I would have spent longer and more there! As it was I managed to snag a nice length of Harris tweed when I was in recently.

That ebay shop looks great.
