The binding is on, pressed to the front, pinned and getting used to its new position in life! Boy its a big quilt!

I've made a nice wide binding, cut 4" folded to 2" wide and I attached it to the back using a 4.5 something seam whatever that is ... so nice and generous all round.

I've finished sewing those buttons on (I loathe sewing buttons on as Im so kackhanded with thread) ... So all in all not a bad mornings work, Im now thinking vaguely about making a small sandwich for lunch.!

Then a label ... what to put ???

When you've made the small sandwich will you quilt it?   ;)
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.

Ummmm Im. why the teeny seam allowance on your binding? If the standard 1/4" seam allowance = approx. 6mm, how come you've gone smaller?

Sorry Rubes, but I really have no idea what the 4.5 means ...

All I know is that it is the setting for a standard .... garment makers ???   :S seam allowance.

Its where the needle on The Splurgess starts out before you adjust it, in the middle of the 9mm span that it has for stitching.

Is that any clearer, like mud???

Standard seam allowance for garments is 5/8" or on many patterns now 10mm (3/8").
4.5mm is a twinge smaller than 1/4"

What is 5/8 to 1/4  then ???...

Sorry for being completely dense here but all I know is that 4.5 is what The Splurgess wakes up with as a position for its needle.

Brain hurting somewhat. So could "4.5" be a scant 1/4" seam p'raps?

1/4" is 6.35mm so no.  :[

10mm and 3/8" are the same save a gnat's crochet.
So, 5mm would be 3/16"
So 4.5mm would be a scant 3/16"

I don't know of anything that would be standard for.

The '4.5' just indicates that the needle will fall in the middle of the 9mm foot. If you move the needle to the left, the display will show ' 4.4,4.3,4.2....1.0.0.9.0.8...0.0. Similarly, when moving the needle to the right the display shows ' 4.6,4.7,4.8....8.7,8.8,8.9,9.0'

The display doesn't indicate the seam allowance that you are seeing.

4.5 on my Janome just means the needle is in the central position.

If I sew a seam with the needle at 4.5 and the regular pressure foot I will get a 3/8" or 1 cm seam if I run the fabric on the edge of the pressure foot.  A 5/8" seam is about 1.5cm.

Not completely accurate but near enough for me.

The veil lifts and all is clear to me now :)
BTW Im, does that mean that your binding is wider on the front than on the back? I just did  binding that way and found it to be easier and neater.

Yes its a nice chunky binding ...

Now I have laboured hard to make a label, but its come out a bit to wide for me to do my usual thing of folding and inserting  alongside the binding ....

Its also on a thinnish cotton which means that it is fairly transparent...

linky

as you can see from the pic ....

as its going to be attached to the red backing how would you girls attach the label ???????
