Sticky backed felt?

I was looking through the interfacings in my local fabric shop and saw a roll of sticky backed felt.  What are its uses?

I've used it on the underside of glass coasters, and anything else that might damage the surface it stands on.
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.

I used some once to make applique letters to put onto some bunting to spell out a child`s name

My husband made me a jewellery box once upon a long time ago, he lined it on the underside with sticky back felt. It protects the surface on which it sits from scratch damage.

I took a photograph and the label says 'iron on felt', but I suppose it's the same thing.

I've seen it used to create appliques on cushion covers and casual clothing (like letters on a sweatshirt or hoodie).  Some leave it as is, some blanket stitch around the applique.  I'm not sure I would trust it in the wash, myself.

The sticky back felt I've used in the past for the underside of things like coasters or ornaments to protect them from scratching polished furniture was just stick-on (like sellotape just sticks).  It was never ironed on.

I’ve used it to put a smiley mouth on a toy millipede. True story.
But what I am getting at is, I was impressed by its stickiness (although I used the type with peel-off backing) and it seems good for toys. Polka dots on a monster toy, stripes on a tiger, panda eyes etc.

I supposed for a lack of anywhere better, the shop put in the basket of interfacings.  I shall steer clear.
