Help me with my wedding outfit please.

Son gets married beginning of July and still nothing to wear.  Leaving it until I get back from holiday which brings me up to beginning of June - only a month away then!

So, I'm 5'6", several kilos, usually wear a size 20.  "Tutonic build" some have said so everything is big, feet, hands, head!  Largish boobs although not oversized, large belly, legs that I would rather not show.  A straight outline usually looks better on me even with my tum  Strong colours look better on me than pastels.  Blond.

My Bestie says I look best in a jersey dress with a wrap front.  But I have so many of those hanging in the wardrobe, I fancy a change.

This is a registry office do, with a big reception/BBQ on the weekend after.  (they do things so differently these days) ><  It would be nice to be able to wear the same outfit to both.

So all you clever stylists out there, what do you think?

Are you planning to make something or buy something to wear @crafter ? Am assuming that you will be buying because of the timescale. Are trousers and a fabulous silk blouse a possibilty?

If you are after RTW I think that Sahara London has fabulous dresses and separates.

Look critically at the photos that abound of today's royal wedding.  IMO the light and bright colours looked much better than the dark ones.

With the English climate you can't guarantee good weather so plan for a jacket of some sort as well as well as a dress.  As mother of the bride it would be more dignified in the register office  - though far from obligatory.  I saw several shoulder capes which I thought looked good.

I'm going through the same thing for my stepson's wedding in August. I started with my essential criteria: firstly it would have to cover my ankles which are inclined to swell up in hot weather (well it might be mightn't it!). Secondly it would need to be patterned in case I spill something down it, and mustn't crease. Thirdly, I will need a jacket in case it isn't hot.

I found some slinky jersey fabric on Ebay in nice colours with a large floral pattern on and I am making a cap-sleeved top and wide trousers. The fabric is proving a pig to work with but I am persevering. I shall buy some silk dupion to match one of the colours in the jersey for a jacket. I don't want to wear a hat - it isn't a church anyway. The other thing I'm doing a lot of is hoping for the best!

Why not?  It's the hat which makes a fairly ordinary outfit look special - and makes the wearer feel it's a special occasion.

I must say I do like a proper hat and that is something her maj gets right - none of this  fascinator mullarkey for her. It might be worth having a little tour of your local charity shops to see if anything catches your eye - people do seem to donate some fabulous wedding hats to charity shops. Well I suppose they do take up space and what else would you do with them after the wedding?  :D

My mum had a stunning outfit for my wedding with matching shoes, clutch and.....hat! The hat was big enough to see but not enormous. Well she hmmed and hawed at a rate of knots and perched it on the back of her head like a yamulke! It looked ridiculous. My dad and I both suit hats so why did she look daft? It was the yamulke thing. I grabbed the hat, jammed it firmly forwards on her head and there it was! Lovely! Made the outfit really knockout.

Vogue 1410 is an easy make, relaxed fit, and can be zuzhed up by using a fab fabric.

Manuela has one in her summer dresses post.

I've made a couple of Vogue 1410s. I added sleeves, neck facings instead of bindings and in-seam pockets. Very easy to make, highly adaptable and very effective.

Personally I hate all those typical mother of the bride outfits..I think they’re frumpy and mumsy.
Have a look at this...I like the jumpsuits

I decided against a hat, mainly because I can never find one that looks right. As I'm only 5' nothing and a RTW size 14, a big - or even medium - brim makes me look like a mushroom. For my own wedding I found one with a small brim and OH said I looked like a German Storm Trooper. I want to avoid that at all costs, especially as OH's first wife will be there. I wore a fascinator to said stepson's first wedding (not that long ago!) and I don't want to look stuck in a rutt!

I may use some of the jersey fabric and have a go at making a flower of some sort to fix on a hair slide - as long as it doesn't look too juvenile!

Jumpsuiits are not very practical if you need the loo in a hurry!

I remember hearing a talk about hats a couple of years ago and the thing I remember most is that she said hats are always made to wearon the top of your head.  If they are supposed to be at an angle, or towards the back, or whatever they will be attached to a base that is meant to go on the top of the head.

Thank you for all your replies.  I am just back from holiday so will be going through and looking at the links.

I had a jumpsuit for the holiday - black and sparkly - and I was surprised how good I felt in it considering the bum and belly problem.  Mr Crafter did have to loiter outside the ladies to finish dressing me though when I had to go.

The bride has asked for no hats, but follies (I mean fascinators are okay).  Not on me though, face and head just too big.   It would look like an ant on a plum.

Hmmm, could be going towards jumpsuit with chiffon hanky/uneaven overlay, plus some sort of jacket/coat to make it more formal for the day, just the jumpsuit for the party.  Will report back.
