Faux fur

I have a couple of metres of burgany/wine coloured faux astrakhan and some lining which is near enough in colour although the colour in the photo isn't too good.

Do I make McCalls 7257

7257 in my opinion. I would worry that a cape might look a bit like a rug. I like the short coat/long jacket.

Would the faux fur drape properly on 7664?

I was leaning towards the cape, but I've tried draping the fabric over a hanger and it is fairly resistant to draping, so maybe the coat/jacket it will be.  I like the 3/4 length version but with sleeves and probably without a hood.

The other thing that I've been thinking about is the fastening.  I like the buttons on the cape, but not sure about getting nice buttonholes in this fabric.  The jacket just has hooks and eyes.  I have some fur hooks but they are are not a good colour match.  Can they be dyed or painted?

That's gorgeous, I think the 7257 would look great in that fabric.

Does it really matter as they won't really show very much, if at all.  Certainly not when the coat is done up and I would think  it would be minimal at best when open., but having said that, you can paint them with nail varnish, or cover them in thread sewn in a buttonhole stitch.  Couture sewing treats hooks and eyes on dresses in this manner and it should work for these as well.

PS, the coat wins for me.

Well the coat is cut out :snip: so decision made.  I still have to cut the lining, but no time left today.

The hooks are tan brown and the fabric is dark red/burgandy.  I was thinking about a (permanent) felt tip pen.  They are fur hooks so already covered with a tubular braid.

The jacket is sewn together but I'm not happy with it.  :'(

The fur fabric is lovely, but the jacket is edge to edge with no underlap so it gapes.  I'm thinking of changing the hooks to a zip, but to do that nicely will mean unpicking the lining which frays horribly and could well disintegrate beyond the sewing line if I try to unpick :o  and I suspect the fraying threads are the cause of my machine jamming up.  :'(

It looks lovely. Could you perhaps make a virtue of the gaping by sewing a band of brocade maybe 1 1/2 - 2 inches wide down the inside edges?

What about a fancy version of duffle coat toggles on the inside?

Just sew the zip on the inside edge, then cover the zip tape with a pretty ribbon?  No need to un-pick anything then. #bodgeit   :)

Or make an underlap with the lining fabric with heavy interfacing inside it, hemmed all round so it can just be sewn on the inside. #morebodge

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I think it will be a zip with one of the bodges, but it will take a few days to get hold of said zip - I'm unlikely to find one locally so will need to think of something else essential to buy in order to make an online order big enough to get free postage.

Will the fluffs not get caught in the zip?  :[
