V9236 - 4 meters?
« on: June 25, 2018, 14:40:17 PM »
I am still trying to rustle up something for my stepson's wedding (as in my diary thread). I hadn't found anything I liked so far, but ordered 3 metres of fabric from The Textile Centre in hopes.

Sew Today magazine arrived today and this is featured:

http://www.sewdirect.com/acatalog/Vogue-V9236.html

I had managed to miss this one before, but thought it might be quite nice under a jacket. However, the stated yardage is 4 metres for the longer version and I now can't get any more of the fabric. Looking at it though, I can't see why it would take so much fabric. It does have a fullish skirt , but doesn't look as if it's that full. Other patterns I've looked at (also with full skirts) come in at 3 metres or less. I would have to shorten it of course.

Am I missing something obvious? There are two reviews on SewDirect but neither mentions this.

Yes that's what I thought @Francesca - I was trying to figure it out without having to buy the pattern first! It's nice to have another view on it, thank you. I was a bit worried that neither of the two reviewers had mentioned it - if you went out and bought 4 metres of something expensive I would think you'd be fairly peeved if you had loads left over. Fortunately the stuff I've ordered isn't expensive so perhaps I'll have to just try it and see.

There are a couple of reviews on PatternReview.  Both reviewers mention that they should have gone down a size and one commented on the yardage, although she was using 115cm wide fabric.

Pattern companies err on the side of caution when stating the required amount of fabric.

You might be able to fold out a narrow wedge from each skirt section and still get it out of 3m.

Thank you all. I think I will order the pattern and give it a try.

Looking at the line drawing there is a centre back seam.Depending on your fabric you could cut the front with the widest part at one end of the fabric and the back the other way round so that  the narrowest parts fit together but if the to is wide to take in lots of darts/tucks this may not work. Still all  you should need is your  length x2 so I'm not quite sure where they get the 4 metres from.

@Greybird I have this pattern, it comprises of 4 pieces - front/side front/back/side back.

The layout diagram for 60" fabric  shows that you use approx 2 + 2/3 times the full length of the dress if cutting sizes 6-14 and nearer 3 times the full length if cutting sizes 16-22.

Bearing in mind that the finished back length of the dress is 43.5" for size 14, rounded to 45" ish - 45*3.7= 167" which is roughly 4 meters  :o

Hope that helps

@Kad - thank you for that - it does make things clearer - the line drawings make it look as though there are only three pieces. I have sent for the pattern now so if I don't have enough fabric, I'll get something else to make it for another occasion.

The pattern gives the same yardage for both with and without nap fabrics. If your fabric doesn’t have a nap or one way design, you could turn some pattern pieces upside down which would probably use less fabric.

Unfortunately the fabric is patterned so it will all have to be the same way, but never mind I shall use it with something else.
