No Bugs Are Getting Me!
« on: June 28, 2018, 21:50:43 PM »
This afternoon I made insect nets for mine & DH's, and our girls, bedroom windows. I will not under any circumstances have our bedroom window open overnight, no matter how hot it is. I'd rather suffocate with heat than have spiders,  moths and midges come in. This drives my DH mad, he can't cope so I went and bought some net and velcro this morning to make these  :D

You can no doubt buy them cheap enough but mine are made to measure  0_0 I can just pull the net away from the velcro to open/close the window....which I may add, is now wide open and will stay that way so we can actually breathe. Have that insects!

Very clever Lolli. Bugs are the worst.

Transalantic question now. Is it not common place for windows to come with screens in the UK? Generally in the US windows have screens fitted to the window, which of course would be difficult with the type of window you have. I've only ever lived in places where the window slides to the side.

A couple of years ago I got a Magic Mesh door screen that worked similarly to your screen.
Hey Bill! Read the manual!  Hehehe.

Nice job @Lolli
@Renegade Sewist in the U.K. we generally don't have warm enough weather to need the windows open :(  or, for that matter, for serious strains of mozzies to breed.
(we also have this strange tradition of windows which can't be cleaned from the inside, imo there's a cartel of window cleaners dictating terms). In Europe windows slide & it's easy to fix insect netting & also to clean them from the inside.

What a great idea, Lolli. Never mind insects. Last night I had the bathroom window open slightly. I heard a noise from the other room and went rushing in, slammed the door just in time so bird that had entered did not go flying through the house. Opened the windows wide so that it could fly out again.

I may be popping into Dunelm tomorrow for some net and Velcro.

Perhaps I should make myself some mesh trousers.  I've been wearing shorts for the last few weeks and my legs are covered in horse fly bites  :S

Mr Acorn is apparently a real delicacy for flies.  They rarely touch me though.

I had a bat in my bedroom one hot night when I was a child.  It hasn't put me off sleeping with the windows (and curtains) wide open though.
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.

We had a magpie in the dining room last week!  It was not happy.  We employed the "chuck a towel over it" technique

(don`t know how it got in - the dining room windows weren`t open - it must have gone through the open back door and strolled down the hall)

Windows wide open for me, bugs don't normally bother me so I don't worry about them too much - not sweet enough.

I would love to have the curtains/blinds open but, as we live in a bungalow, probably not a good idea.

Horseflies are the worst. If they get me, each bite blisters and huge wheals develop around them because I have a bad reaction. I'm the same with mosquito bites too. Aparently from what I've read, it can be down to your blood type, some types are tastier than others to those bugs and they can smell your blood from a good distance away. Mine must be yummy  >:)

You can actually buy them! This fellow shows the full ensemble, down to mitts and footies. Outdoor outfitters carry them.

I went camping in the No. California high country years ago to a place called Mosquito Lake. We came prepared with tons of DEET. We were unprepared for the outhouse. Only part of me not drenched in repellant. Those bites hurt.  ><

My husband has a severe reaction to a horsefly bite a couple of years ago.  Was hospitalised as they thought it was sepsis.  Was a scary couple of weeks.  Was pumped full of antibiotics which permanently damaged his digestive system.

I had a horsefly bite which took bad ways, and it was awful.  Had to have antibiotics in the end, a real nasty.

I had a bat fly in some years ago when I was having a nap - frightened me to death, but it was such a tiny thing.  OH dealt with it, but I think the poor thing was terrified.

Jessie, who is very happy to be here!!  :),  but who has far too many sewing machines to be healthy, and a fabric stash which is becoming embarrassing.

Hmmm @Renegade Sewist  I think I might need a whip and mask to complete that ensemble.  :o
I was hospitalised many years ago when a mosquito bite caused an infection which caused an abcess in a lymph gland.  I had to have surgery and still bear the 3" scar in my groin.

I'm now wondering whether it was the bat or the OH that was terrified.
