What to put in an empty Singer machine box?
« on: June 29, 2018, 14:23:04 PM »
Via my local freecycle I have got an empty Singer curved top machine case.
It originally held a 1954 201K (it's got a paper label with serial number tied on it) but the machine is "long gone" according to the gifter.

So what to put in it? Swanning round ebay but not seen the right thing yet - especially without a case or in a nasty case. Any other ideas?

(I admit this is just a sneaky enabling thread LOL)

When did they change from curved bentwood covers?  From the ISMACS website I think it was about 1954.  There was a batch of 201s with EJ serial numbers in December 1953 and the first mention of aluminium bodied 201s was May 1954.

My 1949 201K has a bentwood cover.
My 1957 201K (aluminium) has a cover like this
but some of the aluminium 201s have slide-in cases like this

I think that the best thing to put into a 201K case is ..........
A Singer 201K  :vintage:

But to be honest I don't use mine, it's hidden away in the attic!  It doesn't fit on properly without being locked and then unlocked to remove it, so that means having the key on a long piece of string so as not to loose it.  I did use it as a template to make a fabric cover.

The case for the aluminium body 201 clips on differently but it's such a horrid colour - somewhere between diahorrea and dirty nappy - so I made that a cover too.  It's just a very tight fit but is removable.

I've just seen this; about 1/3 of the way down the page.

It seems that you had a choice of traditional bentwood cover or a carrying case for the cast iron machines.

My mother's 99k has a carrying case and I agree with the comment on that site about how heavy it is.

A 99K is much heavier than a 201K23. The beige 201 can be carried in the case and you don't wish you had brought the wheelbarrow. I would so love to find the rare and elusive aluminium cast 99K, there are rumors it exits ;- )

I have never seen an aluminium 201K in a domed / bent wood case. The domed cases always come with a cast iron model. I think you should be able to place any full size Singer in your case, you have to check the type of hinges. I guess a 15 or a 201 would be the most common choise, but there are zigzaggers, and the rarer models closer to 15 and 20 if one should turn up. A 99 is 3/4 size and needs a smaller base.
