That pattern would work well with a precut called a layer cake which is 10" squares. You would just have to cut each piece in half to get the bricks.

Layers cakes have lots of different patterns from the same design range, so they wouldn't be suitable if you wanted greater repetition of a limited number of patterns.

Yes a very straight forward pattern to make, you so make it in strips and then join the strips together.

When sewing the strips together join some strips left to right across the quilt and some from right to left.  If you sew them all in the same direction it's very likely that you will end up with a curved quilt!  If your machine has a walking foot, even feed, box feed or whatever, use it.

The quilt your daughter likes is made from quite big rectangles but they are nearly all checks and stripes so you will need to be very accurate with your seams.

Looking at the photo of the quilt on a bed with pillows, I'd guess that it's a small double bed and the quilt looks to be about 80" wide.  It's ten bricks wide, so each one would be 8" x 4" finished.  With the usual 1/4" seam allowances that's 8.5" x 4.5" cut.  That's about as big as you'd get from 10" x 10" layer cake squares.  Precuts are not always accurately cut on grain, and if you choose stripes and checks the straight grain does matter.

The pattern I linked to uses 8 1/2" x 4 1/2", so @BrendaP  is on the money with her estimates. :toast: Quilters are sooooo good at math.  :cake:

That will be very straight forward for you. Pattern is called Staggered Bricks...obvious, right?  >< Also seen it as Brick Wall.

Found a great free tutorial for you! It's sized for various kids sizes. If Daughter wants it larger we can help you figure out the changes if you need help.
Thank you will check it out

Brenda thank you will be going to quilt shop next week sometime if I get a couple of metres of each colour will that be enough ?

I see eight or nine different fabrics in the quilt in the photo.

To make an 80" x 80" quilt with the 8.5" x 4.5" cut bricks (8" x 4" sewn) you will need 20 rows of 10 bricks.  That's 200 bricks (a few will be 4.5" x 4.5" cut)

A fat quarter will yield eight of those bricks so 25 FQs would be needed.

but if you buy fabric cut from the bolt you might get five across the width, definitely four and a half, but you will need about 20 halfs so that's not a problem.

A long quarter (1/4 metre cut from the bolt) will yield 8 bricks + 2 halves = 9 bricks.
200 ÷ 9 = 22.2 long quarters - round up to 23 long quarters.

If you want fewer different fabrics you could say 12 x half metres or 6 x one metre, though I am firmly of the opinion that the more different fabrics in a quilt like that, the better it will be, though if you are going for stripes and checks you might be a bit restricted for choice.

Plus the extras for binding and backing

Yes to all of what Brenda said. That link showed them using 10 or more fabrics. It's a smaller quilt, only 5 bricks wide but what they did was each brick different for the first two rows then repeating that throughout.

The more variety in fabric you have the less yardage per fabric you need, Except of course the backing and binding. When I can I like to pick fabrics I used on the front for the backing and binding. If you choose well you get a reversible quilt.
