My afternoon project - espadrilles!
« on: July 28, 2018, 15:06:39 PM »
Going to make myself some Prym espadrilles this afto so quite excited at having a new project The soles arrived from Amazon in yesterday's post. I don't have the recommended yarn but I've a ton of embroidery thread so I reckon that will do the job doubled up. Now I just need to decide which fabrics out of my fat quarter stash to use - decisions, decisions!  :) :thread:

I've noticed in the past that what other sewists whip up in a morning inexplicably takes me a couple of days. Apparently the espadrilles are a 2 hour project whereas it took me longer than that to trace the pattern, add the seam allwance, decide on the fabrics, read the instructions, watch the YouTube video, cut the fabric, work out which was the right/left front, cut the interfacing and iron it on. Tomorrow I shall sew!

I'd like to think the "2 hours" was just the stitching bit but somehow I think not  :\

Isn't that a bit like the recipes that say prep time 10 minutes but you are supposed to be cubing 2 pounds of beef, chopping 3 onions, slicing 6 carrots, thin, mincing 4 cloves of garlic and slicing a pound of mushrooms. Might as well tell you to do the ChaCha while you're at it.

I'm slower than frozen molasses. I took a class once from a designer and her signature pant, called One Seams as there was no outside leg seam, just a right and left side and the designer could make them in 45 minutes. Most of the class finished up a pair the first night and made another better fitting pair the second day. Moi? I took about 3 months working on them at least once a week.
Hey Bill! Read the manual!  Hehehe.

Finally... Espadrilles!!

Not exactly an afternoon project for me, though I have been busy with other things. The first one was too roomy after stitching and I'd mistakenly used a slightly different colour embroidery thread for the second  >< so I re-sewed no. 1 deeper - with the matching colour thread this time - and added elastic to both heels (better to do this before you sew them rather than after like me  :[) and now they fit! Sooo comfortable although I shan't be hill walking in them. Half way through I decided the fabric I'd picked was too gaudy but actually I love them now.

There are several pattern variations so I already had another pair of the soles on order from Minerva but rang them this morning to size down from 40 to 39. I'm normally a 6.5-7 but my 40 was too large without the modifications. My next pair should be quicker  :).

Excellent work V - well done....don't think my hands would like the stitching though...having a bit of trouble even knitting a few rows of 4 ply at the moment.

They look so fun. Glad they are comfy. Not gaudy at all, just cheerful. Would be great with white pants, denim or some lovely bright red pants. Make red pants next, K?  :cake:

A memory has just washed over me. When I was little I made shoes. I made them out of bags, cardboard & string, socks, Lego, mahogany (my dad built a boat and there were scraps... :)). Pretty much anything I could get my hands on.  0_0

DH's first comment was: "aren't they too big?". His second was "did you sew them (meaning the blanket stitch) with your new (coverstitch) machine?. His third and final was "can you make me a pair of these?" He was quite serious.
