:fabric:  :thread:  :vintage:  Welcome to our Mate Your Orphans Competition  :snip:  :frock:  :trousers:
The aim of this competition is to make two garments that go with an orphan in your closet (the orphan can be a garment, a bag or a pair of shoes). What you make here can also be included in the currently running SWAKOP competition - that way you could easily finish one of your 3 groups...
This is of course not a must, anybody can participate.

Here are the rules (I try to keep them simple and not curb your creativity):

1. Indicate your participation and post pictures of your orphan and your two completed garments here in this thread.

2. Timeframe:
Sewing starts on August 15th (you can plan, fit and cut beforehand) and finishes on September 30th

3. Your entries must be garments

Fire away if you have questions - happy planning and sewing

How orphaned does your existing piece have to be? Is it literally that it doesn't go with anything else at all? I've been sewing 6PACs for several years so most of my things have large families!
A day without sewing is a day wasted.

I have a whole orphanage. I’d need to keep within my no fabric purchase, stash attack scheme though. (Reaching for thinking cap)

Great idea. I made some checked trousers which don't really go with anything.

I am going to inlcude them in the SWAKOP by making a dark grey cardigan (StyleArc Nina) and a top of some sort, possible white.

I have a pair of fancy pants, reminiscent of vintage Chinese pajama pants, wide legged and a contrasting hem band and some goofy large slouchy pockets on them. I only have one top that can be worn with them and the ensemble is too memorable and dressy so I only wear the pants 2 or 3 times a year. Such a waste as I love the pants!

Pants are a crinkled rayon with tiny woven in check of navy and white. Band is navy rayon crepe. I planned on using this in SWAKOP too! I need to do a boxy tee, 3/4 sleeve and slightly cropped-to show off the pockets!- in I think both white and navy, so 2 tees. Or one a light weight sweater knit.
Hey Bill! Read the manual!  Hehehe.

Look for something that you don't wear because you don't have things to go with is. The orphan could be a bag, a pair of shoes, a hat - it doesn't have to be a garment.

@Manuela would the pants I mentioned above be OK? There is one item I can wear with it and TBH that top is too dressy for most things so it's been a year at least since I've worn either of them. TIA

@Renegade Sewist they would be perfectly fine as an orphan. Give it a family by making two garments to go with it  :)

I have a lovely 100% silk jacket, found in a charity shop for peanuts although I know the retail price was well over £100.  I've never worn it because I can't find anything other than black to match the colours which are really vibrant.

In the photo it's with a dress I made for it, but the pink in the dress is not the same as either of the pinks in the jacket.  IF I can find some suitable fabric I'll enter this one, but don't hold your breath!

The dark grey style arc nina cardigan is in progress now so that would be a layering topper to wear with the checked trousers. Not sure what would be a top to go under that. White would be too bright I think so turquoisy blue, ivory etc seem more suitable. I could go for a twin set approach with the cardigan and make a simple knit top in the same fabric as the cardigan, they would definitely go togther!

@Brenda what a find! I hope you light on something to pair with it.

@BrendaP,  When you cannot find a suitable exact colour match, a little trick I picked up is to work with a variation of a tone-on-tone concept.  You choose one of the colour ranges, lets say the deep cool, pinky-purple and the lighter cool pink.   Then you pick two shades of of the cool, pinky-purple range that fall in the midrange between those two colours.  Often the lighter of the two mid-tone variations is used on the top and the darker tone on the bottom.
It's easier than trying to get a match and it gives a softer, subtle co-ordinated effect.

An alternative may be to work with the blue - say with one lighter and another darker than the blue in the jacket.

Also it gets interesting with transitional tones, eg. try a couple of tones on the transition between the pinky purple to the blue - for example http://www.color-hex.com/color-palette/3155

Thank you @Morgan for those suggestions.  I like the idea of using shade and tints of the one colour, but the transition looks good too.

Also I think I'm finding it difficult because the jacket has such a strong geometric checked pattern and I'm not sure whether to look for stripes or something swirly.  I don't think florals would be quite right.

@BrendaP how about going for a solid colour but add texture (as in jacquard, piquée, boucle, lace....) - instead of introducing another pattern?
