Been invited to a 1950's party on 1st September.

Love this

Do you think my size 20 figure could get away with it.  Suggestions for any appropriate alterations would be appreciated.

Yes, I think you could wear it - so long as it fits well and isn't too tight.  Proper 50s style underpinnings would help.

My mother was a bigger lady, and during that era her 'best' outfit was always a "costume" ie a matching straight skirt and jacket with a shaped waist.  A bit like this.

Actually this one (holding a black something) from that page is almost exactly what I remember Mum wearing.

Brenda.  My machines are: Corona, a 1953 Singer 201K-3, Caroline, a 1940 Singer 201K-3, Thirza, 1949 Singer 221K, Azilia, 1957 Singer 201K-MK2 and Vera, a Husqvarna 350 SewEasy about 20 years old. Also Bernina 1150 overlocker and Elna 444 Coverstitcher.

Fantastic site @Brenda.  Where on earth did you find that.  I will have a good look tomorrow when the head is a bit clearer.

It turns out that I am 'stout'.  Makes me feel like a pint of guinness!

Getting quite excited about this.

The 1950's was also about full skirts, so if you have any inconvenient lumps and bumps this might be a better profile.

I've been describing myself as stout for years :S

I can only wear 50s styles with [as BrendaP says] appropriate underpinnings- a well fitted corset smooths out many ills.   I think 50s styles best suit an hourglass figure...but you know what?  If Dior could pad hips and busts to get the effect, go couture dahlink!

With the help of Mr Google.
I think I used search terms like 1950s fashion, 'full figure', 'suit jacket'.

I think that every woman in the 1950s would have liked to have an hour glass figure, but not all of them actually had one although firm underpinnings - a corset/corselette and a bullet bra helped.
