Looking lovely. To "update" your ruler for a 5 3/4" square you can improvise. Use painters tape or perhaps Washi tape to add the lines you need. You might need the 24" ruler to help you.

ETA: Put the tape on the top, not the printed side of the ruler. Just in case the adhesive reacts with the printing. Thanks to Wrenkins for pointing this out.

Be careful if using masking tape because the markings come off some brands of rulers if you stick it on the wrong side. Ask me how I know.  :o
It does, however, work a treat when you get it right.  :)

Oh good Lord no, not masking tape, ever! And I'll go correct my post- put the tape on the top, not marked side of the ruler. For certain things I do put it on the bottom but not for this.

Or you can draw along the lines ... on the topside of your ruler ... using a Sharpie ...

When you are done use acetone (nail polish remover) to remove them.

My husband has a pack of brightly coloured chinograph pencils he uses for marking plastic for cutting.  I think I'll try them as they rub off.

After marking the ruler I find they are mostly just under 5 3/4", some a little more wobbly than others, but almost square. As it's my first I'll just go along and see what happens at the next stage, learning process.

Had a play with layouts on the kitchen floor. I think I'll go with the random one.

Thanks for the comments on the colours, I can't take any credit as Aldi put the pack of 12 fat quarters together.

Husband doesn't like the random. Tough! It's not for putting bed anyway, wrong colour scheme. I think it will go to my mum (flowers small and hidden enough for dad not to complain) or my brother's cottage (where I might get to use it when we visit).

I actually like the first layout where the hexagons are obvious but there's nothing in it really.

The first one looks like little astronauts, the second looks like rows of beach huts and the third hides the random mistakey stripey one. :)
I like two and three best but mostly the beach huts.
