Aldi quilt - first big project
« on: August 13, 2018, 07:36:25 AM »
As I enjoyed the cushion swap and made an extra one for my mum, I thought I'd have a go at a proper quilt. I'm not sure how it will go and fabric is expensive, so I bought a pack of 12 fat quarters and a reduced cotton chambray king sized quilt set from Aldi.

I'll post pictures of my work in progress (this may be slow) and set a challenge to see if you can work out what pattern I'm following.

Patchwork bunting!

Nah!  You'd use brighter colours for bunting.

Is it a variation of 'Boy's Nonsense'?

Plenty of "boys nonsense" about here but not in fabric. Well they are clothed.

A break from sewing as we're on holiday for a week with my parents and brother. But I took a photo before we set off of the next stage. I'm enjoying the "batch processing" element more than I thought I would. It's very calming compared to looking after a 10 year old and a 5 year old when it's raining.

Ah!  It's a variation of Square in a square with the inner square being a 3 strip rail fence block.

I've found it in my big reference book, it's called cracker and the earliest known reference to it dates back to 1932.

When you have made all your blocks play around with different layouts; there will be several possibilities just from rotating them in different seqences.

Thanks @BrendaP that explains why I couldn't find any examples when I searched.
I've been following a free Moda pattern called Links.

120 blocks done. Pattern says 100 so I have some for playing around with the layout. Next is squaring up. Any tips on how to do it? Pattern says 5 and 3/4" squares. My square ruler lacks marks for that size and my long 24" might be a bit unwieldy.

Also spot the odd one out of the striped ones.
