Hi people, I have an interfacing question
« on: August 15, 2018, 13:39:41 PM »
Hello sewists

I joined a short while ago but I'm just getting round to introducing myself.  I live in sunny scunny with a man -Touche - and three hounds - Sooki, Max & Poppy.  I'm very lucky to have my very own sewing house at the bottom of the garden  :P  I took up sewing about three years ago, inspired by The Great British Sewing Bee, and have since inherited my mother-in-law's Janome machine which I love.

While I'm here I'd like to ask a question: what's the difference between fusible fleece and foam interfacing? I have a pattern which uses both so I'm assuming they must be different somehow but I've never heard of foam interfacing.  Any guidance gratefully received...

Hello and welcome!  I'm afraid I can't help re the interfacing problem - never heard of foam interfacing either.  What is the pattern for?  Is it clothing or maybe a bag?  I'm sure someone who can help will be along soon  ;)

Hi Sue - welcome to TSP - very nice to meet you. :)

I'm not sure I can do a good job on answering your question but, to me, fusible fleece is lighter and thinner than foam, and has more flex. Foam has more density and, although it will bend, it is slightly more rigid. I've used the foam to make a clutch bag but my only experience of using fusible fleece is for laptop covers and that sort of thing, so I'm sure someone more knowledgeable in that area will be along to help you soon.

Nevis5 - it's for a hanging magazine rack. I've used fleece before for a bag, but cos I live in Scunny there are no decent shops nearby so I mainly - ha! only - shop online so can't see what's what  ><.  I'll probably buy both; it'll get used up, I'm sure.

Hi @snoozi soozi , I've used both in making bags. As others say, the foam is much more substantial and "bouncier" (for want of a better word) than the fleece. I've also substituted thick fusible fleece for the foam because I wanted a more flexible result.

This is the foam I bought  https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01ENDMZ84/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Do check if you need the single or double sided fusible Bosal as the wrong one could be a problem. A while back I bought the double sided by mistake at the Knitting & Stitching Show.

The fleece I mostly use for bags is this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001C1Y4EO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I have a thinner one for my smaller projects.

I live in Ireland so mostly buy my supplies online like you.

Thanks for the links on the fleece and stuff, you've been very helpful.

Fingers crossed it all goes well  :vintage:
