An Applique Quilt
« on: August 20, 2018, 10:38:02 AM »
Hello, I just wanted to share what I have been working on since visiting the Festival of Quilts.  :)

I made the panel a full year ago, then put it away.  The pattern was from an old quilt magazine - I want to say it was Quiltmania but I'm not sure - it's long since lost so I had no idea what the rest of the quilt was supposed to be like other than it was a border quilt.  So I'm currently having fun figuring out various borders for it myself.  The clam shells will probably be the final round, but I'll see how I feel once it's done.

Ooh it looks lovely.

Is the applique done by hand or machine?  from the photos it looks like hand applied which takes so much time and patience.
Brenda.  My machines are: Corona, a 1953 Singer 201K-3, Caroline, a 1940 Singer 201K-3, Thirza, 1949 Singer 221K, Azilia, 1957 Singer 201K-MK2 and Vera, a Husqvarna 350 SewEasy about 20 years old. Also Bernina 1150 overlocker and Elna 444 Coverstitcher.

Thank you Brenda :)

I did it all by hand as I wanted to learn how to do needle turned applique.  I'm not sure I did it 'right' but it does the job!

The clam shells I'm also having to do by hand as I cannot for the life of me get them to line up with the machine.

That’s beautiful! You must have lots of patience to do all that by hand.

Wow - well done!   :toast:

I have an applique quilt planned (and some of the fabric bought), but I can tell you right now that I won't be trying anything like that clamshell border!  It is going to look wonderful.   0_0
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.

That is lovely BBS!  Love your choice of colours.

I'm happy to say that the top is done and measures about 55" x 58"

The mitred corners don't work amazingly with clamshells - and they don't match up too well but I kind of like how it looks despite that.  I am really pleased overall, though I may not attempt clam shells for a while.  I had bought the sizzix die to speed up the process and ended up taking 6 weeks!

I need to find something to back it with now...

As far as I'm concerned 6 weeks is practically supersonic!
