Singer 99k

Hi, I have just bought myself a 1934 Singer 99k from eBay really cheaply with the intention of having it as an eye catcher on my table at craft fairs. Would anyone know if there is a Vintage Singer machine forum anywhere, Google doesn't seem to be much help and I am hoping your collective brains can do better  <3

I suspect your best bet would be here!  :ninja:

That was weird.
I just went on to my FB page and saw someone had posted about buying a 1934 Singer hand crank to display at craft fairs.
So of course I thought 'gee that's a coincidence'

I have a 1934 99K too, and a 1950 201K. I had the 99K rewired a few years a go, it has motor, lights and knee lever speed controller. I use mine, it stitches flawlessly through most challenges, and behaves well with a buttonholer too. I have used AutoGlym Super Resin Polish on mine, it shined up very well.

This is probably the best vintage Singer group (former yahoo group), all the treadle-on people are there as well as a few expert repair guys; service manual, bobbin case pecularities, tension adjusting,...You will get very good help on vintage machines here on SP too, especially on a 99K.

My 99 is made to be my permanent button hole machine at my studio.  I've had a handful over the years.  One I have now is weird: one owner, sold to a shop, sold to me.  I have all the documents.

I've changed them to hand cranks, rewired them and did maintenance on 'em.  Lot of us have them, too.

Adding my name to list of 99 owners  :)
Have had more than half a dozen, have two in at the moment (one just finished making beautiful for my daughter).
Drop by the Vintage section and fire away  :)

I also belong to the same FB group that Efemera mentioned and I follow a number of VSM related Instagram accounts but the latter are predominantly pretty pictures rather than helpful advice.

I think the image basis of an FB group can be really helpful and certainly sparks constant interest but its very nature means that everything moves on so quickly that the development of discussion and in-depth response to questions isn't as good as a forum like we have here. That said, together it makes a great combination...you can't really have too much after all!  ;) :vintage:
Hopefully back more regularly! Ballroom sewing may be permanently paused but bag making is the current focus.

I have a 99k too, although I rarely use it, mainly because the 201k is always set up for use.  The 99k is a lovely machine, and, dare I say it? nicer to use than the Featherweight - although that has its own charm.

Mine has a knee controller, and is sooooo quiet.

Not much to go wrong, although the tension sometimes needs attention.  There are lots of tutorials for this online.

Jessie, who is very happy to be here!!  :),  but who has far too many sewing machines to be healthy, and a fabric stash which is becoming embarrassing.

I'm not allowed in the facebook group, has it any relation to the former yahoo group, or the treadle-on gang?

A Spartan should turn out nice though, I keep mostly bumping into 99s, and the odd 185.
