Ah Ha!  Re: the Singer that is for sale - the seller does always have some artfully photographed machines, but they always seem to ask a ludicrous amount of money for them, and often describe them as 'semi industrial' - a misnomer if I ever heard.  I think they have been pretty well serviced and they offer some sort of guarantee.  It's worth having a look at his eBay shop just out of interest and curiosity!
I have learnt by my mistakes: Sewing machines now are Bernina 720, Bernina 1008, Bernina 801 from 1981, Brother overlocker, ancient but works well

They look lovely Roger but I have given up buying second hand machines.  I have bought one from a TSP member, and old F&R, which is absolutely fabulous and I have even been able to dump my industrial since having it.

But the rest:

"I was my mothers.  She used it every day and made all her own clothes and curtains and stuff"
Yes, i'm sure she did, but she died 10 years ago and the machine has been kept in a shed since.

or

"I know nothing about sewing machines but it seems to work okay"
Well you know enough to add a zero to what would be a reasonable price.

I am sure there are some lovely machines out there but I never seem to be able to find them.  And as MrC said as he took the latest to the recycling centre "I think you ought to cut your losses and buy yourself a new machine" 0_0 0_0 0_0  ;) ;)

Crafter that sounds like a tough place to be, I don’t know which machines you’ve been buying, but pre 1965 machines tend to be strong runners, because they’re almost all metal, but they’re usually seized due to neglect and set oil and grease. But given some effort they can be coaxed back to working. (As long as they haven’t been dropped or got really damp and rusted)

I had 1 I couldn’t use that had been dropped and the presser foot bar was bent, and shell was cracked subtly tho so the internals had become misaligned.

But the all metal machines with a little love will probably out last us all.
