So as I was in Montpellier yesterday I thought I'd go into  a quilting shop I'd found on line and buy my batting. The website helpfully stated they had quote " a huge range of sizes and colours and weights in stock". Great. So we trudged round looking for this bloody shop . I wanted 280 x 280 thin cotton batting ( as per the listing on the website) Er, no. True they had a lot of batting but it was all and I do mean all 200 x 200 polyester. AND it was 70€ :o :o :o So home we came and I just ordered from Doughty 3 metres of what I wanted including postage for under £40. Result.

And my batting arrived today - hooray - now to wash it - instructions say - hand wash in warm water with mild detergent - check. Soak for 15 minutes, check. Then squeeze  as much water out by rolling  ( I presume it means the fabric and  not me?) in a towel . Hmm now where did I put my 3 metre long towel?

I never wash anything... wadding or fabric, either before or after construction.

Oh that is lovely Catllar I do like the pop of colour you've put in.

Never heard of washing batting before you use it before.

Cotton wadding will shrink. If you wash it before use, you end up with a smooth(-ish) quilt. If you don't prewash, it will shrink up and give the quilt the 'antique' look. Personal preference really.

Prewashing fabric will tell you if the colour runs before it dyes all your quilt (use a colour catcher sheet), and makes it easier to find the straight grain - fabric distorts as it is rolled onto the bolt. This is why you find FQs aren't always square.

If you don't prewash your fabric, the quilt police might call, but you needn't answer the door. ;)

I hide behind the settee when I hear them coming.
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.

I guess it's due to the batting being 100% cotton and it does say it's a personal choice to prewash or let it shrink in the quilt. As the look I'm after is modern I thought preshrink was the way forward. It is now dry, but I'm busy with costumes today so can't get on with this till tomorrow!  I will be able to sleep in peace now as the batting police won't be coming round!

Any suggestions? If I hide behind the settee I'm framed beautifully in a giant window!?!?!?!
Spose I'd better move the settee....
