Denim Kilt
« on: October 21, 2018, 18:17:50 PM »
A tried and tested pattern but yet I managed to cut the wrap the wrong way (should have flipped the pattern piece), so it wraps left to right instead of right to left.
Should a kilt pin go up or down, i never know.
The embroidery is an urban threads design, and I have put it on the back as well.

I think the kilt pin should go up so the head is above the hinge as it were. But I guess it is a question of preference. Great kilt @sewmuchmore .

Looking at images of traditional tartan kilts it seems that nost of the wearers choose a dagger or sword sesign of pin rather than the plain "safety pin" type, and they are all handle up.  You could go for it and choose a nice brooch instead.

I do have the clan Shaw kilt pin but it is on another kilt. That is a dagger so goes down.

I think the pin should go in upside down, ie, point downwards. Then if it comes undone you shouldn't lose it so quickly. (I also think it looks better that way, but that's just me)

Kilt pins are for decoration only.  They go in whichever direction means if they come undone they don't fall out.  But you don't put them through all layers.  If you do, you risk tearing the lower layer.  It's the weight of the pin that's supposed to keep the front flap in place.  At least, that's what I was told back when I was a bairn.

Very nice- what's the pattern?  The missus wants a kilt and I tried following online tutes to make one, to no avail [I think she's too booty-licious!]

@DementedFairy it is a very old (1990) vogue pattern that is well out of print. I have done a quick search and there is one on ebay but it is in Australia.

If you want I could make a copy. let me know.

Folkwear have a kilted skirt pattern that might be of use, although I've never tried their stuff:

The ladies version is definitely a kilted skirt, not a full-on kilt, but it might do the job.

Mine is pretty basic compared to the Folkwear pattern but it does have a nice swing.
