Old fashioned hooks and bars
« on: December 19, 2018, 19:19:14 PM »
Hello! Does anyone know of a UK source for traditional hooks and bars, or more precisely the old fashioned wire type bar as the hooks are easy enough to get? Like these from New York.

They used to come in sets with one hook, one eye and one bar stitched to a card, but now I can only find the hooks and round eye kind, or the flat trouser fastener kind, neither of which is what I want.

I've tried various shops, and flea bay, but no joy. I can get a lifetime's supply from the States, but would be interested if anyone knows where to get them here.

Haven't seen them in shops I'm afraid, but I have often seen them at antique fairs - usually in a basket with buttons on cards.

Could you sew a thread bar to use with the hooks in the pack?

@Greybird - yes, me too, (I must remember to get some next time I see them), but the new ones seem to be very hard to get these days, and @StitchinTime, for sure, but I'd rather have the metal ones if I can get them. Hmmm....

@Sewingforfun  I was member of the TSF and did a lot of searching for tutu related items and as a result I have a large quantity of #3 Silver Hooks and Bars. Happy to to sell some in large or small quantities in the Free wanted and for sale section if you or any other member is interested and this doesn't contravene any TSP rules.

Alternatively you can purchase from https://www.tutusandtextiles.co.uk/shop/fastenings/hooks-and-bars-3/

Here also but only in large amounts. https://www.macculloch-wallis.co.uk/p/715-3-W/hooks-eyes/mw/silver-brass-bars-size-3

You can post them in the Fore Sale section when you've made just 5 more posts, @Sewbusy - that should be a doddle... we can have a chat here for a start, and we always like to know about your weather on the Today thread...  ;)
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.

@Acorn ,Thank you, I did become a member before the 'new' restriction so wasn't too sure if it applied to those who joined earlier. Was in no hurry to use the facility, but thought I would offer the information re where the hooks and bars can be purchased in UK for future reference.

Ssh, the weather here is pretty much like everywhere!

The things you are after really are old fashioned -

This shows them in use at the end of the 15th century!

You can get them from The Tudor Tailor:

HM - those are hooks and eyes.  Sewingforfun is looking for hooks and bars.

I haven't had need to buy either for many years - I have several part cards bought or inherited years ago and I didn't realise that the bars are now hard to get :S :'(  Both of the cards with the bars have "hook and bar loop" printed on them.

I wonder why the bars have become so difficult to find as they often make for a neater finish.

I had the same thought as I too have a stash of part cards and can usually find what I need.

@Sewbusy - that would be great, thank you, and thanks also for the links.

@BrendaP and @Sewingsue - I've finished the ones on my old cards, alas. Some of those cards were my mother's and went back to the 40s or early 50s, but I'm sure they were still relatively easy to get in the 90s at least (I had a sewing hiatus in the 2000s). Presumably the factory making the cards went out of business, and the current manufacturers reckon people just want the loops. I can't see why, the bars are so much better for so many things!

I’ve had a lot of success in charity shop rummage baskets for haberdashery, including hooks and eyes and hooks and bars. Usually quite antique, but such good quality and usually 50p or thereabouts!  :D
