I've decided not to try stuffing my latest scrap quilt into the machine and so I'm hand quilting it. Yes it takes longer than machine quilting, but generally the sewing is less dense than if done by machine so it doesn't take that long.
QAYG has to be pre-planned, ie assembled in strips, which my scrappy top wasn't. It can be done without sashing; you quilt one strip making sure the stitching stops about an inch or more from the edge. Then join the next top strip and the next backing strip (separately!) and slide in a strip of wadding and quilt, going over the joins but leaving the sides unstitched. Repeat as necessary.
