hair canvas for waistband
« on: March 11, 2019, 11:18:17 AM »
I am making some trousers from a Vogue pattern, which calls for hair canvas in the waistband.  The band is shaped, so I can't use the lining/gripper  stuff on a roll which I have.  Does anyone know what weight of canvas would be best for this?

Do you really need hair canvas?  Surely an ordinary heavyweight interfacing will do or even some linen.  The canvas is only there as an interfacing.
Life's too short for ironing.

I asked this question some time ago but can’t now find it but I was advised to use a heavyweight sew-in.

Thanks, I think I will try the sew in and hope it will be stiff enough.  I'll let you know how it goes.. I want it right, because it is a proper three piece waistband.

If the pattern is the Claire Shaeffer trousers I have made these and they are a great fit.

No they are men's trousers, Vogue 8890 with some nice little finishing detail, so I want to get it right.

I think it's probably one of those things where you'd want to feel it in your hands to get an idea, but I think you'd be looking at body canvas rather than chest canvases. I have made trousers with a fairly stiff linen canvas before and while it worked, I think it was a mistake unless you like very rigid waistbands!

@Popeye09  thank you, I saw the two sorts at Kentons and thought I should ask beforehand. No chance of getting to feel it before I buy. I have been looking inside DH's suit waistband and it didn't seem that stiff. Body it is then.
