(Wanted) Gypsy Dress Pattern
« on: March 10, 2019, 03:58:04 AM »
Hello everybody! I'm new to this forum, and I wonder if anyone knows of an existing pattern for UK size 12-14 for a gypsy style dress. I'm looking for a dress with a full, tiered skirt and bell or trumpet sleeves (sexy Mexican peasant style). I've been looking on Etsy for what seems forever, but can't quite find what I'm looking for. Can anybody help please? Thank you very much for any forthcoming help or advice  :flower:

Hi @Stevie , would this be any good, it's a skirt and top but you could maybe join them to make a dress   :) :vintage:

If you don’t mind a skirt and top instead of a dress, Simplicity 1110 might be another option for the skirt. I’m not too sure just what type of top you have in mind, but Simplicity 8362 has trumpet sleeves.

You could get that effect with separates  - a blouse, a skirt, and a corset belt. Have a look at the costume patterns and you might find something. Don’t worry if a pattern says it is “underwear”, it can just as easily be used as “outerwear”.

Click through the photos for any pattern that looks promising to find the line drawings as it is easier to see the design on these and what parts each patterns includes.

You don't need a pattern for the skirt. I churn these out pretty fast. Decide how many tiers you want (the more you have the fuller it will be. Your waist tier is possible as an elasticated job. Wide enough to go over the hips. Next layer is one and a half or two times the first, 3rd layer is one and a half or 2 times the second etc. Advise using a gathering foot as you'll have metres of gathers to do. Bodice top with an off the shoulder grill and ole!!!
If life gives you lemons, add to gin and tonic !

Or even an off the shoulder frill

I am so impressed at the amount of talent out there! Thank you all so much for all your help and advice; I am now in the process of designing my dress using a mixture of DIY and 'bitsa' technology (bitsa this and bitsa that pattern). I haven't sewn for a very long time,  and wanted to make a dress ready for a concert I'm going to in the summer, and you have all helped me xxx

It sounds like a really interesting project. Looking forward to seeing the finished result.
