Alternatives to 505 adhesive?
« on: April 10, 2017, 17:45:36 PM »
Does anyone have any good alternatives for 505 adhesive for temporary fixing of fabric to stabiliser when it is too thick to be hooped? 505 works well but I've found it difficult to remove from the fabric afterwards in some circumstances, even with machine washing.

Even if I use 505 spray I also use bent safety pins. I don't always use spray anyway.

I always spray with 505 and then pin with quilter's safety pins too :)

Oh dear. This so different from my experience with it but I use it for layering stretch lace onto lycra dresses when it soon dissipates as they're handled during the construction process. I'm assuming you're using cotton which is clearly bonding much more firmly.

Do you spray as light and even coverage as you can? Can you do a few light passes over the fabric without coating every square inch?
Hopefully back more regularly! Ballroom sewing may be permanently paused but bag making is the current focus.

Spray the stabiliser (lightly), not the fabric.

Use the outline tackdown (basting) feature or hand tack (baste).  It's the most economical and sometimes the most reliable method if you have problems with needles and sewing through stitcky

Try iron-on stabiliser (hoop stabiliser, place on flat pressing surface, align fabric and use craft iron to heat the fabric onto the stabiliser).

Try one of the stick-on stabilisers -
For economic use, try a piece of cutaway stabiliser with a window cut where you position the stitckyback then hoop the cutaway+sticky and press the fabric onto the sticky.

or WetnStick stabiliser http://www.lordsewing.co.uk/floriani-wet-n-stick-1615-p.asp

or ordinary stabilser and doublesided tape around the outside of the stitching area to hold the fabric in place before tackdown.

Thanks everyone for your ideas. I use it as sparingly as possible and always on the stabiliser. Stick on stabiliser isn't really appropriate in the particular situation I've had a problem with. It was a baby blanket which the mum wanted the baby's name embroidered on so it really needed to be tearaway. Mum has washed the blanket twice and it still has some adhesive residue. I'll give the double sided tape a try and the safety pins. The outline tack down could work in some applications. All worth trying. Thank you.
