Sorry, was channeling a bit of a GBSB moment with that title... 8)

Anyway, back to reality.

When finally forced to admit that this sewing thing was not just a passing fancy, I thought I'd better get a slightly more "user friendly" sewing machine than the hand-cranked antique I had been using.
Ended up with a Singer HD 4423, which seems like a fine thing. Does everything I ask of it with no fuss.

However, for a machine that prides itself on being strong and well built, the cover that comes with it is frankly a bit of a surprise. Apparently made of J-cloth it looks like it should last for about 10 minutes.

So this seemed like the perfect time to steepen my own learning curve a little, by designing and making something from scratch.
This is how it turned out.
Has a cut out in the top for the handle, and pockets on the front for the mains lead and foot pedal.
Hardly the most technical of projects, but as I say, having never done anything like this before, I'm just surprised it actually fits the machine properly.

And the GBSB reference?
Well the outer is made from discarded restaurant napkins, the lining is from old pot-towels, and the pocket linings are industrial roller towel.
Cheapskate, me?
No, I prefer to think of it as "environmentally friendly". :D

Excellent!  I do love a surprise lining.   0_0
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.

@Mick   Very nicely done Mick, and it might even spur me on to do my own machine cover (at the moment its draped over with a very old batik print Indian Cotton bedspread! :|

I went off and bought some nice sewing related fabric. So far it has moved from a spare bed to the chair in the spare room.
Progress!
Nice no nonsense design Mick. I'm gonna steal that.  :)

Love the pockets. Why don't they supply a cover with useful pockets like that? Great job!

How sensible those pockets are.  I've never seen a cover with pockets but they should all have them.
Great bit of recycling.

Wonderful stuff ...

.... and yes isnt it shocking when a blooming expensive machine (I'm thinking Elvis here) comes with the a flimsy, tacky, placky cover ?????

I call it his body bag, out of which I have exhumed him 3 times over the past two weeks!

My (not very expensive) machine came with a hard plastic waste of space cover. No handle, no base just a sewing machine shaped upside down bucket. How veh useful!  :S

Great bit of upcycling, @Mick

My middle sis's (not Plosh) Pfaff has a hard plastic cover with handy sections for foot pedal and something else. My Pfaff doesn't.
