Joined last year, but now have more time as following redundancy I am now 'retired'.  I make bags/accessories etc at the moment, but plan to have a go at dressmaking, never had a lot of success with patterns, never seem to fit me.  but plan to crack it now I have more time.

Welcome Carolyn.  There's plenty of help here for whatever you want to sew (and things that you didn't know you wanted to sew)
Life's too short for ironing.

A big welcome from me too!

Jessie, who is very happy to be here!!  :),  but who has far too many sewing machines to be healthy, and a fabric stash which is becoming embarrassing.

Welcome @Carolyn to TSP

Now you've got time available I would reccomend buying a fitting shell pattern such as
Vogue 1004 or Butterick 5627 and a length of checked gingham fabric to make a basic toile which you can tweek to your individual body measurements.  It will almost certainly take several tries to get it right but once you've done it you will know just what alterations from the standard you needed to do and you can then apply those same alterations to any pattern.

If you do that do post photos to TSP, there are people on here who can tell you just what the problem is when something isn't fitting you quite right.

thank you everyone.

Sounds like a great idea.  I am currently in the process of sorting out a 'sewing room'  which will give me some room to work.  Once that is done then I should be ready for bigger projects.  A few months away yet.
